Baptist Health Presents Defibrillators to Churches
By WestKyStar & Baptist Health Staff
PADUCAH, KY - The Congregational Network for Healthcare at Baptist Health Paducah recently presented automated external defibrillators to 15 rural churches.. Training also was provided.
The Congregational Network for Healthcare was a new initiative launched last year to improve the health of our community by partnering with local churches. The network’s aim is to provide a continuity of care to patients after they leave the hospital with the help of volunteers representing congregations throughout the region.
The funding for the defibrillators was provided by Baptist Health Foundation Paducah and the Baptist Health Auxiliary. Churches were chosen based on their rural locations and distance from available medical assistance. They are also members of the network.
The churches are Antioch Baptist, Barlow; First Baptist and Providence Baptist, Kevil; La Center First Baptist; St. Charles Catholic, Bardwell; St. Denis Catholic, Fancy Farm; Melber Church of Christ; Community Fellowship Baptist, Hickory; Sugar Creek Baptist and Lake City Baptist, Grand Rivers; Ledbetter United Methodist; Smithland United Methodist; New Bethel Missionary Baptist and Briensburg United Methodist, Benton, and Heath Church of Christ, West Paducah.
“Our Congregational Network for Healthcare navigators, Rick Johnson and Ruthanne Cockrell, have been working for almost a year to secure funding and recognize churches that have a need for an AED,” said Joel Jackson, interim director of pastoral care. “Many churches have voiced an interest in having their own defibrillators and we are happy to be able to provide this potential life-saving device. The network is just another way we can demonstrate the love of Christ by providing and coordinating care and improving health in our communities.”

Beginning with their first day, September 19, 1959, the sisters inspired those employed at Lourdes to work to exhibit behaviors toward one another, patients, family, physicians, volunteers and visitors, that assure the mission of Lourdes is effectively and mutually experienced.
Each year the organization recognizes one leader who has been visible in exemplifying Lourdes’ core values of excellence, human dignity, justice, compassion, sacredness of life, and service.

BAPTIST HEALTH DEDICATES
CARSON-MYRE HEARTH CENTER
PADUCAH, KY - The Baptist Heart Center was renamed the Carson-Myre Heart Center Thursday in a dedication ceremony.
The event honored the late Jane Carson Myre, daughter of local Coca-Cola founder Luther F. Carson, and her husband, the late Louis Myre, MD, a Baptist Health Paducah heart care pioneer.
The Carson-Myre Charitable Foundation, started by the couple, has provided the lead gift for heart services in the “Celebrating Miracles, Transforming Lives” capital campaign recently launched by Baptist Health Foundation Paducah.
The foundation has supported cardiac care at Baptist Health Paducah since before the heart center opened in 2007. Their gifts have funded cardiac rehabilitation and various new technology, including last year’s enhancement of the region’s first electrophysiology lab to diagnose and treat irregular heartbeat, or problems with the electrical system of the heart.
Dr. Myre was on staff at Baptist approximately 30 years before retiring in the mid-1980s. In the 1960s, he, along with Drs. C. Pittman Orr and W.P. (Pete) Hall, set up the hospital’s first cardiac ward with five beds. The hospital’s historic cardiac program grew to offer the area’s first open-heart surgery in 1985 and first nationally-accredited chest pain center in 2008.
“Dr. Myre was an essential part of Baptist Health becoming the region’s heart hospital,” said Judge William Howerton, chairman of the Carson-Myer Charitable Foundation. “We know Dr. Myer and Jane would be very honored to see their names on the hospital they loved so much.”
William A. Brown, hospital president, said the hospital is grateful for the legacy of Dr. Louis and Jane Carson Myre. “Our continued relationship with their Carson-Myre Charitable Foundation has helped us become one of the most respected hospitals in the state for cardiovascular care,” he said.
Baptist announced a $10 million campaign in January to support cancer, cardiac and maternity care, as well as outreach programs to improve the health of the community. “Celebrating Miracles, Transforming Lives,” the first-ever comprehensive capital campaign in the 64-year history of Baptist Health Paducah, has already raised $7.6 million.

BAPTIST HEALTH PADUCAH STROKE PROGRAM RECEIVES NATIONAL QUALITY AWARD
PADUCAH, KY — The Baptist Health Paducah stroke program joined an elite group by being honored for the second consecutive year with The Get With the Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award for meeting national guidelines for stroke care, as outlined by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
Baptist Health Paducah is the only Kentucky hospital west of Louisville with this level of recognition. In addition, the hospital received the associations’ Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite for meeting stroke quality measures that reduce the time between hospital arrival and treatment with the clot-busting drug known as tPA. “This award says we strive for the best possible care for our patients,” said neurologist Joseph Ashburn, MD, stroke services director. “While meeting the minimum requirements for a stroke center is considered acceptable, we at Baptist Health believe the people of our region deserve nothing less than the very best medicine has to offer.
